NYC: The Dating App Jungle

You've heard all the names for New York City. The Big Apple, The City that Never Sleeps, The Concrete Jungle, The Empire State. Well, now I'm about to introduce you NYC's newest name: The Dating App Jungle.

Empire State of mind is more like Empire State of swipes when living single in New York City.

Tinder (eye roll) and bumble are unfortunately apps that live in my phone when I’m single in the city. Don't get me wrong single life can be bomb. Hello doing whatever I want, whenever I want, thank you. No collaboration about going to some kids party far out of the city and what to do after that or checking in all the time. Living life like how you want. Unbothered.
*flips hair*

When I feel ready for a relationship tho?...not a man will approacheth thee on the streeteths of New Yorketh.

I have lived in Baltimore, Atlanta, Philly, Atlanta again, and now  of course the Upper East Side in Manhattan. And NYC is by far the worse for dating. People just don’t stop to smell the roses. Or me.

I have such a love hate relationship with dating apps. I hate them so much and yet I still can’t delete and have them remain deleted on my iPhone that's battery is dying even though I just charged it. I can count on one hand the men who I’d actually date who have approached me irl. There ain’t many folks.

Tinder tales. Bumble brawls. Plenty of Fish. Ok Cupid. Coffee Meets Bagel (I still don’t get that one) HINGE. Match. Happn and so on. All royal pains, but kinda play a part to get out there and date. Check the stats.

My Tinder matches: 1049
Bumble matched: the matches disappear so idk but a lot 😐
HINGE/Happn: no one talked to me
Ok Cupid: too many creepy people messaged me
Plenty of fish: see above
Real life encounters: 2

So what the heck do I do about this swipe situation? There are millions of users and I don’t really foresee the dating app trend deteriorating anytime soon. Do I give in to the hook up culture? Do I keep swiping and optimistically hope the Grand Poobah man I’ve always wanted swipes me right and we run off into the sunset in the Amalfi Coast together?

I’ll tell you this – I’m not about the hook up culture. Nothing wrong with it (safety first, kids) but just not my cup of tea. And I’m also quite real and know that statistically it’s not gonna happen on Happn or the like. Soooo that leaves my (bleak) preference….REAL LIFE.

Meeting someone in real life is amazing because that attraction and spark is immediately there! I’m just over here hoping I get Meghan Markle’d – Prince of fill in the blank I’m here when you’re ready.

Maybe I’m doing it wrong. Maybe I need to study where Guest of a Guest says you can meet young professionals and then just live my life at those places until I strike gold.

For now, I’m just going to do what I do best: go with the flow and see what the future holds. I’m not going to let The Dating App Jungle discourage me. I usually have the most luck when not looking for anything or anyone in particular.

xx

  1. You know -- I'm kind of on the fence about dating. Sometimes I think I would be really into it, but then I remember all the time that I have to devote to someone else and the space I have to give up and I am suddenly turned off by it.

I live in LA and dating is just as hard -- especially with the dating apps. I've only had two real-life encounters as well and neither of those went all that great.

    Thanks for sharing! x

  2. Dating can be such a pain but sometimes it can be fun to meet new people and have them take you to new places! I agree having to share your time can be hard but with the right person can also be worth it.
